John W. Leonard

John is a native of Baltimore, Maryland, and received his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Richmond, Virginia, in 2002. Following graduation, he worked for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, and campaigns for Congress in both Maryland and Colorado. Thereafter, John returned to school and completed his legal education in 2010. He graduated, with honors, from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, in Washington, DC.

While in law school, John clerked for an administrative judge for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission where he assisted with handling administrative claims of discrimination against the Federal government. He also served as Editor-in-Chief for The Journal of Contemporary Health Law and Policy and proudly published an article examining Congress’ alterations to the Americans with Disabilities Act in 2008. However, it was his introduction to litigation through a summer clerkship with a private firm in Maryland that made the biggest impression upon John’s legal career while in law school.

John began building his litigation experience through his admission to the Maryland Bar in 2010 and the District of Columbia Bar in 2012. Throughout this time, John represented both individual and corporate clients through litigation in state and federal courts, handling personal injury and contract disputes in both bench and jury trials. This experience led him to join a District of Columbia-based litigation team at a nationally recognized firm, where he assisted in defending clients that were often faced with potential liability and exposure in excess of one million dollars. The work took John across the country and offered the opportunity to work with (and against) many dynamic litigators in a multitude of jurisdictions.

John joined Dawson Orr in 2015 and was admitted to practice in Florida in May 2016. He brings a wealth of litigation experience to the firm and an ability to counsel the firm’s clients in each of the Firm’s Fortes. As an Associate Attorney, John’s practice focuses on Personal Injury Litigation, Commercial & Business Litigation, Professional Liability Litigation, and Construction Litigation.

John is married to Jacksonville native and fellow Catholic University law graduate, Elizabeth. He and his wife happily spoil a black lab (Beauty) and golden doodle (Barnaby). John is also a drummer, an Eagle Scout, and a passionate Baltimore sports fan.

Based in Jacksonville, Florida the attorneys at Dawson | Orr draw upon 100 years of combined legal experience to serve clients throughout Florida and across the country.
